What have you found in your pocket change, lyin on the street, etc.? I don't mean you bought a roll and searched through it or went through a bulk bin. I mean you went to the 7/11 bought a soda and found something in your change. Call me obsessed, but I like to buy things with cash and get change back so I can search through it and find interesting coins. I'll start off. Nothing great, but they're treasures to me. I've found a wheat penny (I don't remember what year or mint mark), a bicentennial (drummer boy) quarter, a smashed indian head (barely recognizable), and a penny that looks blue to me (I'm color-blind).
naked heads tails coin. best coin ever! I have had it forever. It was in my pocket after an all-nighter at a beach bar some 30 years ago.
My first mismatched serial numbers $20 was in change from a grocery store. I sold it (unfortunately) a couple of weeks later for $500. That got me started in collecting paper money. Now I check both my coins and bills religiously!
My three most recent such finds in change back from-- convenience store [1], deli [2], post office [3]: • Series 1969-C $5 Federal Reserve Note, Boston note [1] • 2007-S Proof George Washington golden $1 coin [2] • 1979-S SBA $1 [3]
Yes, that's correct, they are collector version coins in Proof. However, sometimes they get broken out of sets and end up in circulation. Roll searchers somewhat frequently find proof coins while searching rolls from the bank. This coin may have been determined to be low grade in its Proof set and so put into circulation by some collector or dealer who didn't care about it. Maybe some kid spent it instead of collecting it. In this sort of economy someone may have been desperate or in need and used it to buy something or pay a bill. Whatever the case, it got a big old fingerprint that won't come off.
My 10 year-old son and I were going across town to visit an old friend who is a serious collector, specifically so that he and my son could chat about coins. We were really early, so we stopped for gas to kill some time before we got to his house. I was pumping gas while my son ran inside with a few dollars to get some mints and gum. He came back out with a 1911 Lincoln cent in his change. Really beat up, but still pretty cool. Also got a 1919 cent in change at the pet store earlier this week.
i've received a 1943 mercury dime in change from target. i also got a 1910 wheatie from them as well. my fiancée received a 1903 indian head cent from them. all 3 coins came from the same store. i wonder if they have any rolls to give??
A few years ago, I got two 90% Washingtons in my change at school. The thing that surprised me (given how rare silver quarters in circulation are) is I found them within three weeks of each other, and haven't found any silver coinage at all since. A few wheat cents and pre-1960 nickels, but nothing really great.
I took some junk metal to the scrapyard a few days ago and in the money they gave me, I received a 1964 quarter! First silver quarter I ever received in change (that I noticed anyway).
I've gotten a lot over the years. A Liberty nickel when I was in college. A war nickel on the bus as a kid (I stupidly pointed out that it was a silver nickel and the bus driver tried to take it back, really tried hard, I won) . Lots of silver and a bunch of wheats over the years. Unfortunately, I've gone mostly cashless in the last 5 years or more. Very little change anymore. Too bad.
my neatest find was at my grade school parking lot when I looked down and found a 1909 V.D.B Lincoln Cent when i was ooh about 12 yrs old. Though it was/is in a pretty beat up condition...maybe in G-VG condition.
I thought so too. I'm really surprised the cashier at the scrapyard didn't take note considering they are in the business of metals! lol
In the UK I found two 50% silver shillings in the late 1980's, and also a badly impaired (scratched) proof 1984 2p and a decent 1998 proof 50p. Also found about 3 or 4 circulated 1985 50ps ... not too bad considering a mintage of only about 600,000. Over here in the US, I've found two silver dimes in change (1947 and one other). Got a 1926 1c as well.
This summer i was walking along the river bank near my house looking for bottles, since the water was the lowest i have ever seen it and then i saw a small disc in the water and it ended up being a Bust Dime
