Some coins while not commanding a premium or not much of a premium are really hard to find or are hard to find in better grades 2 examples in my opinion 1894 Indian head - you almost never see them in lots of Indian head pennies and their extremely difficult to find above vg anywhere same can be said for most all 1918- 1924 standing liberty quarters you see 1917s often and post recessed dates are common but pre 1925 are scarce yet don't command much of a premium also theres many 19th c gold with very low mintages that cost no more than common ones with high mintages these are just a couple examples what are your thoughts on coins that are much scarcer than value indicates

At one time I thought coins with the attributes you describe would perform terrific over the long term. However, through the late 1990s and into the late 2000s we were in perhaps the deepest, broadest and most aggressive bull market in coins that any of us has ever witnessed, and even with all this wind at their backs, I can't say that these coins outshined other niche areas. So, I have come to the conclusion that I still love coins like this, but that the thrill has to be found in the hunt and in knowing how relatively scarce they are while realizing the broader market might never care.

Tom I agree totally the pleasure is knowing that you have something more uncommon than the rest what I was looking for more in this thread is what coins do people think are underrated or under appreciated

This is exactly why I love early proof coins. I can get a coin with a mintage well under a thousand for a few hundred bucks. The hunt is the hardest, and most rewarding part.

For Jeffersons I'd say the most underrated date is the 1953, ALL of them are hard to find. I have found more 38S nickles(two) while searching than 53, D(none), S(none), P(one after over a year of searching).

I agree with you on the 1894 IHC. That's a tough coin in anything above VG.

But for some reason, although you pay a premium for them, it's not nearly as high as I might expect given the relatively low mintage of only 16.75 million.

A potential sleeper that hasn't quite panned out?

I found this link very useful for analyzing IHCs, their mintages and prices.
