    d_lairson Looking for loose change

The wife and I are looking for some uncleaned ancient coins. We've read some articles about it and it looks like something fun that we can do together.

We would like to buy a reasonable large lot, to give us something to start with and work.

Basically we are looking for a source to buy the coins from.

As a side note, we saw some coins on ebay, from a dealer in Hong Kong, selling uncleaned ancient Chinese coins. Is this a questionable deal?

    Thanks,
    David

    Anything from china is questionable!

If you want large lots, better quality lots, and cheaper lots, then go to vcoins.com

I agree. But you don't necessarily need to start off with a very large lot. Believe me, 25 coins will be overwhelming enough! But vcoins would be a very good place to go for them. If you're only looking for one or two, as I did when I started with uncleaneds, ebay is a pretty good place. But don't expect much, lol.

What about slugs? Is it worth buying a couple of them, just to practice on before taking on a "real" coin?

Lol, if it really is a slug, then don't bother because it won't get any better. But if you're referring to "crusties"... Crusties are extremely encrusted coins that take a lot of work to come clean. Thing is, they may not clean well at all. BUT, they are truly unsearched, as no one could see through all that gunk! For starters, I'd begin with regular ones. Once you're up to more of a challenge, go for the crusties.

I myself tried the uncleaned lots on ebay, and after about 6 months, I wound up with 9 flat metal discs, and a really horrible Antoninus Pius, which is barely recognizable. Wasted $20.00 for nothing. I might try it again, but someplace reputable...maybe vcoins.

That looks like a pretty good shop, with great variety. But I don't see any uncleaneds?

It just occured to me, that I said "try vcoins" and I have NO clue which vcoins shop to go to! Any recommendations?

I've ordered coins from 1/4 of the dealers on there, they are all fine.

I bought most of my ancients here.

also a lot of guys that are involved in uncleaned coin groups, occasionally sell part of a lot that they bought. Never buy from China. Coin dealers at Vcoins.com, have strict standards they must meet to sell there, so they are safe to buy from. Sometimes you can find lots on ebay, check the feedback, never buy from the guys that say "Gold found" or other hype. JonySky

Not questionable; BAD. It can be difficult to buy any coins from Asia (especially China) that are real government minted coinage.

I like to buy from arta2002[IMG] on eBay. Of course, since they're just across the river from me the shipping costs are good. Still, I've never been unhappy with any purchase from them. They do a good job with photos and what you see really is what you get. I must have 6 or 7 jars with coins being soaked - but then I like crusty coins.
