hi all. I am a new collector and have been buying proof sets on ebay. for most of my sets from the 60's, the envelopes have the mint initials p.c. or u.c, or s.s. Are only the ones that say p.c. proof sets? Thanks!

Howdy mattm - Welcome to the Forum !!

PC - stands for Proof Coins

UC - stands for Uncirculated Coins

SS - are you sure it's not SMS ? I'd have to dig out my old sets to check - but that's not one I recall.

One thing you need to remember about buying these sets on ebay - not everybody selling them knows what they are. People often mistake a Proof set for a Mint set and visa versa. You can also find Proof sets in Mint set envelopes and visa versa. And you can also find sets with fake envelopes that the sellers have produced on their own.

But the coins - there's no mistaking the coins. A Proof coin will have surfaces in which you can see yourself just like a mirror. With an uncirculated coin - you won't.

The 1965 Special Mint Sets only say S.S. The 1966 and 1967 SMS's that I've seen are in hard slabs in a blue folder with no letters on them.

And welcome to the forum Matt :)
