I have a a lot of uncirculated mint sets from the early 60's to current and would like to know if I should keep these coins in the plastic or should I remove them and put them in 2x2's or air tites and in an archival album. Will this hurt the future value of the coins? Is it beneficial to leave them in the original packaging. Thanks in advance.

There was another thread just like yours a few weeks ago. If you do a search for it, it may answer alot of your questions.

I would suggest that in the short term it depends on how you want to display or view your coins. If you want to see them as collections of nickels or dollars then, by all means, cut them out and put the sets together. If you prefer sets of the denominations all together by date then keep them intact. Someday there will be a premium for intact sets but even then there will be a larger premium for nice coins and varieties. The coins do go bad in the original packaging and this loss may well greatly exceed the premium for intact sets.

The cents are the worst with the '68 leading the pack. The '69 sets go bad very easily and some of the '70's do.

I'm not especially concerned with the set premium though I do have a set of gem mint sets that I keep in a bank with enviromental control.

It does seam this was discussed recently. I have been collecting Proof sets and Uncir sets from as far back as the 50's. All are as they were when I got them. If they do go bad some day it will probably be in several hundred years. If that happens I'll let you know.

Take a look at the '68-P cent. There are several others that are usually bad but the '68 always has carbon spots on one or both sides. 95% are awful and the other 5% will be soon enough.
