I'm planning to buy one or two commemoratives, and I'm just not sure whether to go with the uncirculated or proof.

Everyone likes a proof, but are there merits to the uncirculated?

Unc.'s tend to be minted in lesser quantities, that's why some collectors like 'em. Personally I will purchase an example of each. There was a time though when I'd only purchase the proof version. My logic was, at the time, that proofs tended to be a more perfect coin. We all know that the term proof refers to a method of manufacture and not a condition, but back then (youth) I was convinced that the proof was a better version to own. If I were placed in a situation where I could only purchase one or the other, then I'd choose Unc. I've come to like the satiny finish on these coins...:)

I think it's really personal preference. I have a proof 1986-W Liberty Gold but when I bought the 2006-W American Silver Eagle I chose the Unc. My choice, different decisions for different circumstances. Are you shopping for anything in particular?

Well, the scout commemorative. It seems to me that sometimes the design lends itself better to one kind of strike over the other.

I think I'd buy which ever one will go up in value highest.I was a stickler for proofs till one year an unc coin rose higher.

Uncs. I had a statue of liberty as a pocket piece for a while.

I have the 1996 olympic halves in unc, nobody wanted them at the time and now I theoretically can sell them for hundreds each.
