This is the most exspensive coin I've bought to date. I got it for $40 on Ebay and I was hoping you guys could give me an opinion on the grade and if I got a deal or not. The obverse has a colorful tone if you look at it tilted 45 degrees or more but the sheen is more dull than the back, the reverse is very sharp and shiney with more detail than i've ever seen on one of these.
I hate to say it, but I believe there is rub on the reverse, which in my mind would limit the grade to au-58. The picture may simply be overexposed.
It definitely could play a factor. I really enjoy type one buffaloes, much more so than the type 2, which unfortunately, is all coins after 1913, and even some dated 1913.
Wow, that is a nice one. I don't think I see wear there, but could be anywhere from AU58 to a 62 IMO. Very nice coin. :thumb: Phoenix
looks AU-58 to me, and a bit high at $40, I'd rather be $30 into it. I often prefer an AU-58 to an MS-60.
It is a very nice coin, but unfortunately it is a circulated example. If you look closely at the reverse, you will see a few areas on the buffalo (especially near the tail) where the luster breaks. These flat spots are wear. There are also a few flat spots were the luster breaks on the Indian on the obverse. I would put the coin at AU-55, possibly a 58. Its a nice piece to add to the collection, put the price was a little high for the grade. Hope this helps.
I think it is ms poss as high as 63, but it is a weak strike. The poor definition around the horn, and the idians hair dow it for me. btw, there are far too many bag marks on the indian for the coin to go 65 imo.
