I think Uncle Grant looks great on this coin. He was the 18th President of the United States of America. Slabbed and graded by PCGS as a MS-69 Proof Deep Cameo from 2011, San Francisco mint.

Something about these modern, high-grade proof dollar coins really catches my attention! The golden cameo against the pitch-black field is so eye-pleasing!

Grant ran for President three times. He won the first two tries in 1868 and 1872. He ran for the Republican nomination in 1880. The convention was deadlocked between him and James G. Blain. In the end the convention picked dark horse candidate, James Garfield.

There are many Grant campaign medalets. There was one in 1864 when some people were trying to get him to replace Lincoln in the Republican ballot. There were many in 1868 and 1872 when he ran although the 1872 pieces are much harder to find. There were just a couple from 1880.

Tis medal has been viewed as one of the premier Grant items, but its following has been dropping off in recent years. I bought it for less than previous owner paid, and I am sure that I get less than I paid when the time comes to sell.

This piece was issued by the Swiss - American Republicans. It was executed by Hugues Bovy who was a Swiss die maker.
