This is a fun variety that is easily missed, unless you look carefully. I found this coin in a shop for just $1.50--a great price for this high grade. Only until I got home did I realize it was the E/N variety. Based on comparisons between coins, every letter is punched individually in the die for the legend. When they got to punching the "E" in REGINA, they used an "N" instead. Apparently, it was hard to fix the mistake, and this dramatic blunder is the result. The white arrows show portions of the "E"; the yellow arrows show the "N" underneath. The dramatic diagonal cross-stroke of the N is a giveaway, as well as the blob in the lower right corner--probably a die chip. posted in high resolution to study--maybe you'll find one? There is a nice premium on this variety. The coin is in a beautiful grade. A few small marks, but no overt signs of wear. One other marker to look for is the "V" in VICTORIA. It is rotated CW and low.
You are very lucky to get that at that price, good thing the dealer did not notice the E/N or it would be more expensive. Also, Nice photos.
Thanks! I spot coins like this because most dealers never bother to check for them. I specialize in overdates, and most I find go unnoticed.
