ahaha => those are awesome portraits Ummm, I wasn't sure if you were soliciting other coins with ugly heads, but it's in my nature to post 'em when I have a chance ... Balbus Fabatus Gorgon L Marcius Lucius Axius Nerva Pan Rhodes Vespian
Right ... almost. Those are "founding fathers" or other important statesmen of the Federal Republic of Germany. From left to right: Ludwig Erhard, Konrad Adenauer, Kurt Schumacher, and Franz-Josef Strauß. Erhard and Strauß were ... hmm, vertically challenged. Adenauer was the first chancellor (head of government) of this country. When he was first elected, he was already 73, and Adenauer was 87 when Erhard followed him as a chancellor. Schumacher spent about ten years of his life in nazi prisons and concentration camps - and that did certain not just affect his "looks". He was the leader of the SPD and fought many decisions that Adenauer's CDU made, but Schumacher also opposed any plans to merge the Social Democrats and the Communists. In that regard he contributed to the fundaments of the country too. The Adenauer coin was the first one in that series (minted 1969-87), then came Theodor Heuss (first president, minted 1970-87), then Schumacher (1979-93), Erhard (1988-96*), Strauß (1990-96*) and Willy Brandt (first SPD chancellor, minted 1994-96*). Those are circulating commems so to say - the occasion is always mentioned on the portrait side. (* These three were also minted, for proof and BU sets only, between 1997 and 2001.) Christian
I like them myself. If you are going to represent a real person, I prefer showing them "warts and all", not the semi-stylized versions of Presidents that we use. Its very similar to Roman Imperatorial coins in that regard.
Ugly because it was supposed to be.... The obverse is beautifully executed but the reverse...who knows?
Ahh, good ol' Gorgon.. lol now that is one of the ugliest faces on a coin i have seen, but still interesting
