I started looking for a 1949-D quarter in a higher grade, and everyone I've seen has a very ugly tone, a true dog. What happen to this date/mint mark? Were they all in government holders made of some bad vinly plastic or what?
I have never heard of anything making this particular date a crazy toner. I just imagine that the coin's you have found are toned. Silver is pretty reactive and tends to form silver oxide layers resulting in toning. But, blast white examples are out there. Here is a blast white MS66 that sold a year ago: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=28041&Lot_No=21297 Here is a blast white MS67 that sold last summer: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1110&Lot_No=5796
Only thing I can think of is that sellers are holding back on the better stuff until the market strengthens and stabilizes.
