1985 U.S. Penny with no outer rim. Hello again. I have this 1985-D Lincoln penny which has barely no outer rim - edge, and seems to be a little bit smaller around and thinner because there is no outer rim. And the word States the bottom of the E & S is missing and the word of is smuged. Is this common with these pennies, or would this be considered an error. Thanks for any help. I have attached a picture of the front of the coin, and will attach a picture of the back in another thread. Rodney.
rodsodd - It is better to keep using this thread for the purposes of discussion rather than start a new one But to answer your question - based on the pic it appears that your coin is what is known as a railroad rim error. Please see the following for more info & pics. And if you can - please try to provide a pic taken showing the edge of the coin. LINK
I agree. A railroad rim is named that because the edge of the coin with this error kinda looks like a wheel on a train, a railroad rim.
I must be missing something because all see is a cent with poorly formed rims probably due to low pressure striking. I don't see anything here that resembles a "railroad rim" or partial collar coin.
