I heard somewhere last week that the Philadelphia mint penny line was shut down. So, I hopped on my Vmax today and rode down the turnpike as fast as I dared towards the City of Brotherly Love (sometimes referred to as Filth-adelphia) luckily I didnt receive a speeding ticket. So, while I was there in Philadelphia I decided to stop at the U.S. Mint and while there (to my slight amazement)dd: I noticed the penny line was shut down. I'm wondering why the mint shut down production of the most widely produced coin. I saw copper coins from either a previous run or they were just blanks but I couldn't tell if they were still making the 2009 type 1 yet. Anyways, I looked around at the gift shop saw a couple of those ultra high relief gold coins I can't afford and talked to a few mint guards to get any extra insight I could pry from them. I saw Ben Franklins Grave site near where i parked, gave a guy with a cup the remaining change i had for watching my bike and bolted out of town. So, if anyone knows what might be going on with the whole mint thing please let me know. Thank you
The Fed has not ordered more Cents because they don't need them. With the slow economy people are emptying out their coin jars and putting the coins back into circulation. Thanks to all these coins entering circulation there is no (or at lease less) demand for new Cents. I'm sure the Mint will start producing more Cents when the Fed orders more.
They are not mint guards they are Mint Police,(total police powers) it's a sweet job and I have looked into it. Unfortunately the closest Mint from me is West Point NY and its a 2.5 hr drive. Not sure why the Lincoln cent line was shut down.
Ah, yes they are Mint Police. A slight typo on my behalf. Do you happen to know the address of the mint in West Point, NY? I may take a trip there someday.
The U.S. Mint is a manufacturer just like any other factory. If there is no demand for your product, you stop making it until demand is back.
West Point, NY 10996 (845) 446-6200 Think its on Fenton Place or something like that. Its very close to West Point Military Academy. I was there in Jan for my retirement physical. I think the Military offers tours to the public in the summer an Fall. Its right on the Hudson river. http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint/mint_facilities/index.cfm?action=wp_facilities
To the best of my knowledge there are NO tours of the West Point Mint. From the Mint website concerning the West Point Mint
http://www.usma.edu/visiting.asp And this is from the academy's webpage. I was there this Jan. I was refering to the academy, not the mint, sorry
That's what I have heard. Too much gold and platinum to let tourists roam around. I have also heard that they don't give tours of the SF Mint. I have been to the Old SF Mint but could not get into the New SF Mint.
