Hello I collect U.S. commemoratives such as the 2010 Boy Scouts coin, the Mt. Rush more set, the Abraham lincoln coin, the Lincoln chronicle set, the 2001 silver buffalos, and the america the beautiful coins. I also collect the american eagles. My dad also collects U.S. commemoratives such as the 2008 uncirculated 4 coin buffalo set and the 2009 UHR St. Gaudens. We know the mint makes a lot of commemoratives but none of them are worth buying. We've been wondering why the mint doesn't make more ...

If anything, they should stop making them. Their program is overkill IMO.

We've been wondering why the mint doesn't make LESS...if you want commems...go with the pre-82 and youll find low mintages with good prices and a great design

Some of the $5 gold pieces are interesting. If gold ever goes below $750 I may try to do something with those. btw it sounds like your dad picked a few winners there.

I'm not really following these statements. You say none are worth buying (but earlier in the post you say you collect a lot of the commems). So you think none are worth buying, yet you've bought many, and you want the mint to make more?

I have maybe 90% of the early and modern commemoratives, but haven't bought the last couple. US Mint make too many coins to keep up. I would like to buy the first spouse and ATB 5 oz, it take too much money to buy everything.

I buy many of the modern commemoratives (post-1982) of the designs that I like. I really like the 1992 Columbus Dollar w/ the space shuttle reverse. I also like the "Nolan Ryan" Baseball Dollar from 1992. The 2006 San Franscisco Mint Dollar with the Morgan Dollar reverse is also pretty sweet. Lots of others as well. Often, you can buy these coins, even the gold ones, for their melt value. I've even bought several of the Silver Dollars in PCGS or NGC slabs for their silver melt value. They will always be worth at least the value of their silver content, so if you treat them like bullion investments I think that buying the designs you like is a great idea provided you're not paying big premiums to get them.

But yeah, as a coin collector, I much prefer the classic commemoratives and I buy lots of those too... just much harder to get those for silver melt value :)

I don't know what you're getting at but I think the commemoratives available from the US mint are abundant and for the most part pretty sweet. I collect some too. They account for about 15% of my collection. The 2008 Bald eagle set was awesome. I have the 3 coin set in PF-70. I picked up the 1992 Columbus coins ungraded, the 1892 Columbus is in my type set. Also got a MS-64 1920 Pilgrim half for the type set. That is a beautiful coin. I got a couple MS 08 Bald eagle commems for the type set as well, and of course the 82 Washington half in PF and MS.

I too picked up a Lincoln Chronicles set from the mint for $55.95. The 2006 S.F. mint commems are awesome. Got the $5 in MS70 and the $1 in PF ungraded . And several others. I've always thought the commems were an untapped, under appreciated segment of the hobby. There are many beautiful examples. I wouldn't say there's a shortage. I only touched on a few. There are many more that I want. I guess I'm thankful that they go over-looked so I can get them cheaper!
