Howdy All! I'm starting a listing of types of errors that may be found on nickels....what did I miss? Off Center Clipped--all 3 types Broadstruck Double struck Saddle Strike Die Break (Cud) Wrong Planchet Blank Planchet Thanks Speedy
Brockage, No FS (over zealous polishing?/other?), {error? or variety?} Missing mint mark?? ( I don't recall any for nickels but it's bound to happen), Doubled dies.
I count these in on varieties....but I had forgotten the top one! Thanks!! I'm thinking about giving awhole page to that dude! Keep them coming! Speedy
you do have one thing here--what about wrong stock?....has there ever been a nickel struck on another type of stock...kindof like the many quarter struck on dime stock?? Speedy
Ok...here is the list so far... Off Center Clipped--all 3 types Broadstruck Double struck Saddle Strike Die Break (Cud) Wrong Planchet Blank Planchet Brockage Dropped letter/number Die Rotation Lamination struck through Grease Filled Die (This is one I'm not sure if I'll add or not) Copperwash (Sintered Planchet) Any more?? Speedy
My Variety and Oddity guide lists nickels struck on silver dime planchets, cent planchets and on steel cent planchets intended for 1943 & 1943 S cents. Lou
Well...that isn't the same thing as what I'm talking about. That is called wrong planchet...that means a planchet meant for another type of coin. When talking about Wrong Stock...the planchet is the right size for the coin it was struck on...but the type of stock, or in some cases, thickness is what is wrong. Such as...you can get a Quarter that is struck on a Dime Stock...the planchet size is right for the quarter, but it is as thin as a dime. Speedy
Here is the list---I think that it is pretty complete. The ones with a * at the end are some that I might not list at this time.
