Well thanks to some input in the other thread here I had going, I've decided to pursue putting together a type set, probably following the dansco 7070 album.

Before I buy the album, is there anyone who can provide me with a list of the coins this album holds?

Any other advice before I start my research for buying?

Since I, too, am working on a type set (finished my 20th century set not to long ago, now slowly working on my 19th century set), I'd say the first thing you want to figure out is:

    1) Do you want each example to be of a certain grade, say MS-63, buying only what you can afford in that grade? This means most coins will be more common-date coins, but the set will look very nice and uniform (this is not what I am doing). Or,

    2) Do you want each example to be a rare/key date coin in the best condition you can afford, be it AG or MS? This is what I am doing. The set looks less uniform, as some of my later date type coins are high MS examples or even proofs (like my Franklin and JFK halves), while some of my other types are really low grade (like my AG 1921 P Mercury dime). You'll need to do a lot more research if you take this path, as you'll want to be looking at mintage numbers and condition rarity. However, the advantage here is that your type set will be worth more in the end as the years go by, since key date/mint coins tend to rise in price at several times the rate that common date coins do.

    Hope this helps.

Yea, I'm doing it the first way, I like the more uniform look. BU or MS 60 Minimum

Well, this may be because I'm an early collector, but I don't have that much of a care of key dates unless I'm trying to complete a set.

For Pre-1900 coins I think I'm willing to pay a few more bucks for decent grades, but I'm pretty price sensitive so I won't be quadrupling the cost for a highest grade compared to a middle level.

For the 20th century coins I'm undecided whether I want to get the best in proofs or stick with something around uncirculated. I'll have to think about it.

I attempted this about 10 years ago. I no longer collect type coins, because my main goal now is finding 20th 21st, and very late 18th century error coins from bankrolls or cherrypicking. When I put together a type set (never got a lot of the bust coinage and silver dollars), there was also a gold page you could buy seperately and add. I bought the gold page, and only put one Quarter Eagle in it.

Regardless, without giving you my life story, there used to be a U.S. type gold coins page, and I imagine there still is.

yeah I see the optional gold page on the net, I won't be getting that. Theres too many other coins I could buy for the price of one of those gold coins. Maybe one day when I win the lottery...

Some of the gold coins are cheaper than some of the other stuff when you get into certain grades.

I still haven't decided about gold or not for my set. Anyway, here's the Dansco gold list in case you wanted it...

Gold Dollars Liberty Head (Type 1) 1849-54
Gold Dollars Indian Head (Type 3) 1856-89
    Quarter Eagle Liberty Head 1840-1907
    Quarter Eagle Indian Head 1908-29
    Half Eagle Liberty Head 1839-1908
    Half Eagle Indian Head 1908-29
    Eagle Liberty Head 1838-1907
    Eagle Indian Head 1907-33
    Double Eagle Liberty Head 1850-1907
    Double Eagle Saint-Gaudens 1907-32

In my type set I focus on common dates as much as I can - so that I can afford better grades. I also buy some slightly damaged coins for the older dates/types if they show good detail. Small rim nicks are not very notable in the album and are sometimes sold at a substantial discount.

thanks for the link bruce, very helpful info.

I may follow the idea of the person who wrote that article for choosing my grades. I'll go for non-key dates with these grades (unless the best price is still above and beyond my budget)

    20th century 1950-2000 B.U. and Proof
    20th Century 1901-1949, A.U.
    19th century 1850-1900 E.F.
