What type of coin is this? it's not silver but very good shape. I found with detector on field. what is worth this kind of coin with good condition? Septimus Severs 3g, 1,8 mm
I think it is silver. This is how silver can look when heavily tarnished (toned). Denarius, from Laodicea. Like this one from CNG's archives: 269, Lot: 365. Estimate $100. Sold for $70. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.32 g, 6h). Laodicea mint. Struck AD 198-202. Laureate head right / VICT P AR T HIC AE, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and trophy; captive seated at feet to left. RIC IV 514; RSC 741. Good VF, toned.
For a reason I do not understand there are quite a few silver denarii of Laodicea that seem to get blacker than most. Denarii of the period were only about 50% silver so it may have something to do with what the other 50% was. Perhaps it has something to do with the soil type where these were found. Was this from a fertilized field? I was told 50 years ago that more damage was done to ancient coins in the last century than in all the centuries before because of the spread of chemical fertilizers. True? A little wear after being dug up might reveal a more gray interior as in the first below but the smooth black is better looking than what you are likely to get through cleaning.
