Just ran across a 1981 S Dime and wanted some one to agree (maybe even disagree) my eye are getting horrible. I think its a Type I but then look at other photos that might be type 2? Thoughts?
I would need closer pics of the mint mark but I'm thinking Type 1. It just seems more jumbled and looks more like a miniture "8" to me from your pics. I may be wrong, but that's my vote.
I can't get any bigger picture of this, in the forum, its a pretty Hi-Res Scan so you could always download the photo and blow it up more on your computer if this isn't big enough
It took a lot of really looking at it to discern it from pictures rather than in hand. the upper loop is clearly larger and has a bulbous serif at the top of the "S". That is a type II
Hmm, on 1981 S the Type II should have identical bulbous serifs on the top and bottom...it's too hard to tell with the pics provided, but I'm leaning towards Type I, as the bottom serif does not appear identical to the top (smaller), and may even have the flat 35 degree "tip" on the bottom serif that is characteristic of the Type I. -LTB
The upper loop IS larger than the bottom, but that is one of the key diagnostics of a type 2 coin. The upper loop will be larger and have a bulbous serif. The serifs are the same size on the 1979 type 2, but not on the 1981.
I think you have the 1979 and 1981 TY1/TY2 backwards mikenoodle...this drawing is useful in determining the 1981 S TY1/TY2 (provided on this forum by snowman). -LTB
Well thanks to LTB and the drawing, (I must admit thats the best picture i've every seen and most helpful) I was able to determine that it has the 35 degree bottom and there fore must be a Type I. I'm begining to think that the 1981 type 1 and 2 was created to send coin collectors batty. Casey
