Even though my coin collecting has slowed down, I managed to acquire recently two really nice Byzantine coppers. First one is a follis from the reign of Heraclius. Up until now, the coppers from this emperor I have seen while browsing were rather worn and crude. This one is rather big and in remarkable shape. If only it was from a year or two earlier, I would love to have a revolt of Heracli coin in my hands! Second one is a tertateron from the reign of John Ducas Vatatzes. Really nice tetartera are equally hard to come by, so I had to snap it too. I wonder what our tetarteron expert @BenSi has to say about it.. Did I do well? Feel free to post related coins
It is a very beautiful example and yes you did very well. The image of St. George is excellent and attractive.
That tertateron is a beauty, as is the Heraclius follis - exceptional coins! Here's my humble example:
They're both phenomenal, @Only a Poor Old Man; congratulations on getting back into collecting in such a big way! My John III is, promise you, not as good as @robinjojo's. But yours makes St. George look as if he's stepping out of the page of a book.
It is interesting that Wayne Sayles put the John III tetarteron in his book as one of the Masterpieces of Romaion Coinage. Here is my example, I went through many before I found one this nice, almost as nice as yours @Only a Poor Old Man
