I have been gradually working on a set of large cents by die variety. I'll probably never finish it because the a decent 1799 is out of range, but it's interesting to add another date now and then. I found these two dates at the recent FUN show. An 1843. This one is graded NGC MS-62 Brown, CAC. I am a little surprised that CAC liked it, because I'm not so sure that the color is original. It does have nice eye appeal, however. I had been looking at this one on-line for a month or so. I bought it when I saw it in person. The second one is an 1839. This one has made some rounds at the major auctions. It is a "Booby Head" variety. This one is MS-63, Brown. I am close to having a "short set," which would cover the Braided Hair cents from 1840 to 1857. I need one more date. I suppose I will look for the pieces in the 1820s and '30s I don't have, with a bit more in earnest, but in lower grades.
John, outstanding, as always. Thanks for sharing those with us. Looking at those two side by side, the '43 looks more RB as opposed to straight up B. The '39 absolutely looks B. I'm always incredibly impressed with virtually everything you show us. Thanks again.
Outstanding pieces, Bill, and thank you for sharing! While both are exceptional, I really like the looks of the '43. There's some spots on the reverse of the '39 that are distracting to me.
@johnmilton Those are BEAUTIFUL!!!!! This is one of my favorite series.. Thank you for sharing! They are wonderful!
When you get below MS-64, the question is, will it be physical marks are spots. The spots is not in the optic center on the coin.
