I used to be into coins big time before I got into bottle digs and paintball. This one has always stuck out. How did this dime get this way?

EDIT: dime number 2 is up, it has some wear on it, but it seems to be made out of some different type of material. I took side-by-side pics for comparison.

It looks like a metal detector find.
The pitting could be from being burried in the earth.
    Just my opinion.

lol I know it looks wierd... but Im pretty sure its not a dig find. I found it floating through some change about 5 years back. And I have dug coins before, and I have never found a coin in the ground that looks like this due to erosion etc. It looks more like it was accidentally imprinted...

I have another one here that Im going to post up, its circa 1950 and it looks wierd too...

    EDIT: more pics are up.

    Prophet,

    Welcome,

From 1946 to 1964 the Roosevelt Dime was made out of Silver

The both look like they have spent some time on the road.

    Good Luck

No one can say with absolute certainty.
They've both been beat up very badly.

Found in a busy parking lot, used as a screwdriver, picked up on a highway?
    Take your pick.

I have one that looks like your 3rd picture. I wonder if maybe these aren't an attempt at forgery

    Wonder no more.

    It is absolutely genuine.

You have to admit that the first one has some pretty odd wear on it... I mean, look closely at some of the wear marks. They follow through onto the ridges of the coin, and they are also pressed in rather than scratched or worn in.

I know that the 1950 is just worn from normal use.

well that second one is pretty funky. Dont see how it can be worn and still have such deep lettering etc
looks like it should be an ancient..lol

Also here, is as close as you are going to get to a "screwdriver" coin. (just for laughs)
