I have an 1864 two cent piece, ANACS graded AU50, cleaned with UNC60 details, which has the first two digits of the date doubled (18 over 18), which is not noted on the slab, since I didn't pay for them (ANACS) to attribute varieties. Not knowing much of anything about two cent varieties, I wonder if anyone here knows anything about that variety and what it's value might be in AU50?
I've misplaced my Two Cent Book but would surmise no real extra value. Many varieties exist with repunched dates in the series. Does it look anything like this? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/18.jpg
The 1 in 1864 looks fairly close to the coin you show, but in both digits, the degree of separation is stronger. If there is no real value added, then I will just resell it, since I already have a better one in my type set, so there is no point in hanging on to it.
If you do sell it get good pics. There ARE buyers for these types of coins you just need to find the right buyer and make sure they know.
samsara15 that's good advice from clembo on your Repunched Date. The Cherrypickers' Guide (5th Edition) page 166 shows a pic of the RPD of the 1 and 8 digits. If your coin matches the pics there it is a FS 02-1864-1301. Usually shortened to FS 1301. That book shows a AU50 value of $150 for a starting point. You mentioned it was cleaned so you should expect some impact from that. As clembo noted there are variety collectors that a FS1301 would appeal to.
