This piece of copper is in better shape than my large cents. Someone spent some time cleaning this guy too. Nice example of a civil war era coin. Enjoy Darryl
Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy looking at a Two Cent Piece as I am a self professed Two Cent Junkie. 1866 is actually a tough date to find in MS63 or better. Nice coin.
You are quite welcome. This one is in better shape than the other we have. I cannot imagin seeing one in MS63 condition - that would be nice to look at, not that this one isn't . Regards, Darryl
Darryl, Your wish is my command. http://usera.imagecave.com/seeker444/myebay/66o.JPG http://usera.imagecave.com/seeker444/myebay/66r.JPG I put this one in the MS63-4 range with a lot of red still present. The reason I say that it's a tough date in high grades is the amount of time it to me to locate the right one for my set. I completed the set from 64 small motto through 1872 in Mint State. Took me years to get the raw coins I wanted and the 66 was the second to last. Only the 72 took longer.
Very Nice!!! coin Clembo - I would imagine there are not too many left in that condition. Thank you for sharing it with us. Darryl
Nice coin! Cleaned or not, that coin has VF details and strong eye appeal. But I would catagorize it as a nice example of a post-civil war era coin as the civil war ended in 1864.
or 1865. "American Civil War From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search "The Civil War" is the most common term in the United States for this conflict. The American Civil War (1861–1865) was a major war between the United States (the "Union") and eleven Southern states which declared that they had a right to secession and formed the Confederate States of America, led by President Jefferson Davis."
Is there an album made just for the two cent peice, or do you have to get the dansco with the two and three cent peice silver and nickel album ? Bruce.
Bruce: I believe that there is only the mixed album. However, there is an acrylic holder, by Capital, that holds the two cent set.
clembo: Congratulation on completing that 2 cent set. I also like the set. But, I'm far from complete, and not in unc. I do have two '64 small mottoes, a G-4, and a VG-10 Also 1872: VG-8 and an XF-45.
Thanks guys, I stand corrected and it's always a good thing to keep our history straight - not sure what made me think it ended in 66 but regardless it's a nice example of a coin minted a year after the end of the civil war. Not too many dings and wear is not too bad on the shield. Regards Darryl
Thanks Frank, I originally planned to do the set in VF-XF but screwed up and got a nice glossy brown unc 1865. Well, had to go unc then. Seeing that you have two small mottos and two 1872 you've knocked out the keys. 1864 large motto through 1871 is a lot easier to assemble. What grade are you looking to do the set in? Word of caution don't buy an unc unless you plan on doing the whole set. Mine are in a Capital holder that's why I had to complete them that way!
I just hate when you start out to get an Unc and end up with something as beautiful as that 1866 you were nice enough to share with us. I'm sure the hit to the wallet hurt a little, but the end result must really be something to see. I envy you just a bit - but I am very happy for you as well... Coins of that age, in exceptional condition, are quite extraordinary to me. Again - thank you for sharing... Darryl
Darryl, It's YOUR thread. If anyone deserves thanking it's YOU. As for the hit to the wallet? OH Yeah! Old copper ROCKS. Keep posting them my friend! clembo
