Here are two Canadian Cents, one is an 1859, and the other is a 1886. The 1886 is the one which had the PVC (thanks satootoko) damage which I removed using all the wrong methods  :D

I've never seen Canadian cents from that period. Are they the same size as US large cents? Also, what accounts for the unusual wear patterns on the reverse, looks similar in both?
Victoria must not have missed many meals in that 27 years..hehe

They look about the same size, maybe a little smaller (1mm) or so. The coins are thicker towards the middle, so I guess that's what caused the odd wear pattern.

Wear generallly occurs on the high spots, so that pattern is not what you would expect from a coin that noticeably tapers toward the edges. The apparently normal wear pattern on the obverse also argues against that cause.

    Which leaves

Maybe the die had a flaw? The coins are flat (no bends) and are about 1mm thick. Then again the queen has a different profile on each one.

Also the 1859 coin is pre-confederation, so it was issued under the Province of Canada. The pre-confederation effigy of Victoria was uncrowned. There are four varieties of QV's post-confederation effigy.
