Just a couple of seated dimes - I managed to attribute the 1830 as a JR-8 R3. Even though I could not find one with all three cracks. There is a vertical crack into the hair - a horizontal crack at star 2 and star 10. At start 10 it goes throw the two lowest points of the star. The 1820 I think is a JR-10, but could use some help with it. I checked coinzip trying to match it up on that site, but thought someone here could might be able to help. Then I threw in the seated half - I usually don't buy coins this dark, but for some reason I like the way this 1840-O looked. As always all opinions and comments are welcomed. And yes - the 1830 is cleaned.
I know little (read: nothing) about seated dimes, but I have some decent resources. You might want to check out www.seateddime.com This is a commercial site, but there is good information, as well as good links to the following: www.seated.org and www.seated.org/boards/ You should find what you're looking for here. Good luck!
Now that I look at your pictures, instead of the pretty words, I see that you actually have bust dimes, and the links I gave you may be useless. Try this instead: http://www.byronreed.com/BCTC/home.htm
I can't believe Mark bought a cleaned coin? The pickin's must be getting slim for him to do that? I love'em all! :thumb: And I know you got the cleaned one at a good price. It will eventually retone and look like it was never cleaned, so no big deal. Thanks for sharing and I wish I could be of assistance on figuring out variety but I stick to my coppers and know very little about the silvers. :goofer: Ribbit
I like them all Mark - The pictures are a tad small to really appreciate the detail, but from what i can see that 1820 dime has got to be VF30+. Is that the so-called office boy variety? Yes, the 1830 10C is cleaned, but if the price was right, its OK in my opinion. I have my eyes set on one ending today which is also cleaned, but appealing nevertheless. Regards, Eduard
Nice coins, I really like the half. So hard to find them without being glaring white from cleaning and dipping. congrats!
Thanks for the comments all. Don't the thumbnails expand when you click on them? I usually post thumbnails so those on dial-up do not have to wait for the large pictures to load. I have seend the JR-2 called the office boy reverse, but I eliminated that because the ME in america are joined - not true on my 1820. The coin shop should be looking for some books on early bust coinage for me. I normally do not look in the dime case - most of the bust coinage in this case usually does not catch my eye. The 1820 did - darn shame about the hits on the reverse but they do look old. I spent an extra half hour or just chatting with the owner on toned coins. I spent another $12 for toned coins I thought lehigh would appreciate - but I can't get pictures to show the toning. Might try again today.
Mark, my browser was not able to open up the thumbnail pics when i first tried. Now it works. Ok, so the 1820 10C is not a VF+ and it does have a couple of hits. But it is still a nice coin with what appears to be natural toning. I just like the early dimes. The seated half seems quite original, and "crusty" as they say. Eduard
