Stolen bank notes worth $50,000 Why am I not surprised one of the accused is drug addict? These geniuses sold some of the stolen notes to a jeweler who also buys "coins, gold and other small collectibles". The jeweler paid the men $5,450 for 9 notes. The men returned the next day and tried to sell more notes for $5,500 but the jeweler said they were not worth that much. The following day the jeweler compared the serial numbers of the notes he bought to a list of stolen notes and discovered he had bought stolen notes. When the men returned again trying to sell coins the jeweler stalled the men and called police. I'm not sure what they mean by "laminated notes" but I suspect they mean "slabbed" (or whatever the correct term is for third-party graded currency). I would also like to see that 1752 $10 note. I wonder who issued it 24 years before the start of the Revolutionary War. I wasn't aware that the term "dollar" was in use that early. Again, I'm not sure what they mean by "unsealed currency" but I suspect they mean "raw" or loose notes. This just goes to show that many cases of coin and currency thefts go to fuel a drug addiction. At least these guys didn't spend the currency at a convenience store for beer and cigarettes.
You know, stories like this really make me wonder about the logic or reasoning behind acts of theft involving items of numismatic significance! Come on, do people not realize that these were not printed last week? They do not circulate and they draw attention whenever and however presented. These folks should be registered for this years "Darwin Awards" RickieB
Its not totally their fault. Its an addiction they have to fuel. And its sad but true, theft is one, efficient, proven way to fuel it.
Glad they got caught but have to wonder how many dealers at a show leave $10,000 worth of stuff just lying on a table for a "quick hand".
He's serious. They may have made bad choices during their lives that put them in that position...but once you are trapped by addiction it's very hard if not impossible to get away. Many of us are fortunate enough to never know what that is like...I am and I hope I never do.
Nope not kidding at all. When you are addicted to drugs it is all you think about and you will do anything to get your fix. Its a downward spiral.
