Two 1909S VDBs - what would a dealer pay?

    Hi all,

I am unable to provide pictures, but I'm looking for some opinions from those familiar with "real world" prices as to what the following two Lincolns would be worth to a dealer purchasing them. I'm just looking to get a ballpark figure.

They are both 1909-S VDB, and are genuine.

    > One is graded by ANACS (older small slab) as Cleaned, EF Details, Net VF30.

    > One is graded by PCI as MS63, Red and Brown. (This one exhibits "woodgrain" toning)

I have the Red Book and Blue Book, but you know how far off those prices are - and the TPG matters too.
I'm just trying to tap into some real world experience as to a ballpark numbers as what I could expect to get from an honest dealer. :goof:
    Thanks in advance!

I'd estimate that a dealer (not a collector) would give you between $800.00-$900.00 for the S VDB cleaned VF 30 in the ANACS slab. Without the cleaning you could get more, thats just my estimate.

You would get more if you crossed that PCI coin into a NGC holder. :thumb:

Yeah but I doubt it will recieve the same grade. Still a good idea.

Me personally, I would pass at the cleaned at any price, and would evaluate the PCI as a raw coin and consider it's chances, cost and time to get it into PCGS or NGC holder. A dealer might pay $1300-$1500 for a decent RAW 63ish SVDB if he needed one, post some pics !!!

No problem coins for you? Learned my lesson with a raw "cleaned" S VDB. lost about $200 on it. One of the reasons I joined cointalk though, so I guess good comes from bad. Never again.

Most cleaned/problem/net holders just sit forever without selling unless at a blowout price. Most end up cracked out and sold by the shyster method to an unknowing collector who " thinks " he is getting a deal. I wont go that route.

Ask Rick Snow why he says: " There is no price too cheap for a problem coin "

    ;)

Thanks to all of you for your input!
I just may be cracking out the PCI slabbed one.
I apologize for no pics, but right now I have no camera.
I just got a heads up from a friend as to a straight shootin'
honest dealer in my area - I'm going to give him a call today, also.
My buddy has some good things to say about this dealer as far as evaluating and suggestions.
I appreciate all your advice and will keep you posted if I decide to do something with these.

    Harry,

I think we have all done that in one form or another. It's all part of our numismatic education. Those lessons that cost us the most are the ones we remember the best. And learning from others is invaluable, too. That's what is so great about Coin Talk - so many other collectors that have knowledge or experiences that others can learn from.

Actually dealers don't care about the grader it all depends on if they agree with the grade. If they think it's over graded they will pay less. Umm and yeah just because it's slabbed doesn't mean you'll get more for it.

    VF30 retails for about $1250. MS63 retails for $2750.

So what may a dealer pay well on the VF I'm guessing maybe $900 & $2500 on the MS63. High grades are harder to sell so it is possible a dealer may go lower than that.

Jack is dead-on correct here and his quoted price on the 63 is about the max you could expect from a dealer.

    Welll...here's the outcome

I ended up consigning these and cleared $700.00 for the Cleaned VF30.

The PCI MS63 was found to be cleaned and retoned, and not MS.
Cracked out, I cleared $950.00 on it.

I've had these for about six years and cost me $650.00 and $700.00 respectively. So bottom line = I'm happy.

    However...

:loud: NO MORE PROBLEM COINS FOR ME!

Congrats. Investing in Keys is almost always a win win situation. So can I interest you in a new one?

    LOL. Just kidding.

    LOL2 :D

I rolled most of the proceeds into a UHRDE purchase - ordered today. I hope the mintage doesn't go too high on 'em.

Thanks to all for your excellent and generous input to my query!

My thoughts were about $900-950 on the VF and $1500 on the 63 in the PCI slab.
