Hi there, finally got the energy to go through bag of coins my relatives passed down. Not a huge coin person so many I've never seen before. Including one twenty cent piece?? First I thought many were fake or a novelty cause I'd never heard of them but then I wondered why, if you were going to make a fake, it would be made in such poor condition. Many are so worn I couldn't identify them with any photos from the internet. Anyone here heard of a twenty cent piece or have relevant information on them? Let me know. Thanks.

Could be real or fake but we will need photos to try and confirm this. The Chinese are notorious for faking all sorts of U.S. coins and then tumbling them in dirt to get a worn look. Welcome to CT!

It looks real to me but cleaned and polished.

That's a completely genuine United States coin. In uncleaned/relatively undamaged condition it would be worth upwards of $100. Unfortunately, your coin is worn and looks like it has been cleaned at some point in its lifetime. Because of this, it will likely sell for under $100 but probably still above $50 since 20 cent coins are very desirable.

Here's a good link that tells you about your coin. The 'S' on the back means that it was minted in San Francisco (as opposed to one of the other operating US mints).
    https://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/1758/twenty-cents/1875-S/

20 cent pieces were indeed made by the US Mint but only from 1875 to 1878. Believe it or not, the US Mint also made 1/2 cent, 2 cent, and 3 cent coins. If you search these up on Google, you'll find all sorts of interesting information.

Just curious - What else did your relatives give you? If you post pictures of the really worn and unidentifiable coins, some of the members here will be able to give you a positive identification. The 20 cent piece is very desirable and was made in very small quantities (hence why they are so valuable). 1875 S is the most bountiful out of all the 20 cent pieces.

Very interesting. I will take a look at that further. Really appreciate the information provided. This USACOINBOOK.COM should have more answers for me. I'll try to post some more photos. Thanks a heap!

It is a Spanish colonial 2 reales, made at Potosi, Bolivia. The mines there were very productive.

Very bizarre coin but it's old and pretty! There's also many of these which according to USAcoinbook are silver half dollars made from 1892-1915. I have found another site that is easy to navigate called coinstudy.com but both are good.

There seems to be lots of 'S' coins. And Bolivia. . .apparently.

Just in case you are not aware of this, please do not try and clean the coins. this has a negative value on these and they depreciate in value when improperly cleaned. Welcome to Coin Talk , you have some very interesting coins . Thanks you for sharing your gift with us here , always nice to see other peoples coins . Dillan

The 20 cent piece is in nice shape. It may have had an old cleaning, but don't clean it. It's much nicer than mine and has good value.
    Over $200 in XF condition.

    From top to bottom:

    1864 2 cent piece

    3 cent (silver)

    Walking liberty half dollar (1916-1945)

    1809 1/2 cent coin

US large cent (date not shown)

    1865 3 cent (nickel)

US half-dime (I don’t know much about these but yours looks authentic)

And finally the 20 cent piece at the bottom.
