As you can tell in the photo the coin is around the size of a penny. I'm trying to figure out the denomination, which side is obverse and reverse, and exactly what century it is from. It just has "99" on it without the two preceeding numbers which you usually see on coins. I'm pretty sure it is from 1699 but I dunno if it could be from 1599...
Except for the "99", from what I can make out, the obverse design is similar to some of the copper 2 pence described, but not fully pictured, in the 17th Century Krause 2d Ed. with various KM#s; but they are all listed as undated circa 1632-1650. A design not pictured is described as a Crowned C.R.. A thistle design shown for 1677 -1697 varieties resembles the picture posted for the other side. Krause only goes back to 1601, and my other general reference, Craig's Coins of the World, starts in 1750, so it's no help either.
I didn't notice it until now but it does look exactly like the flower from a thistle plant! Do you think the "CR" could mean Charles Reign?? If it does neither 1599 or 1699 would make sense though...
"CAROLUS REX', Latin for King Charles. Yes, Charles I reigned from 1625-49, and Charles II from 1649-85.
Yah but if it is referring to the second Charles why would they have kept the CR since it was presumably made in 1699 and he died in 1685???
Well, that's why we need some input from an expert in Scottish coinage. The "Crowned CR" is described on some Charles I coins, and a "Crowned C II R" is described on some Charles II issues. I do know that it the last two digits of a year were not commonly used as coin dates on, so I doubt that the "99" on yours is the date, but since I don't really know, and I have exhausted my own reference library, I'll either have to wait for someone to come along who does, or do some further research.
Scots Bodle. Russell,as I am a collector of British Commonwealth coins,I have got one of these. This is the Scots Bodle (2d.) of King Charles II's undated coinage of 1663.The later ones are dated. Aidan.
Wow thanks Aidan and you too Satootoko. I'll write that on the holder right away. Why do you think it has "99" on it??? Or do you think those are both SS's??
Russell, they are both 'SS''s,as it is part of the motto 'NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT',which means 'DON'T HURT ME WITH IMPUNITY'. Aidan.
Cool. They are both worn down at the top so I was pretty sure it was 99. Is this coin pretty common or is it worth a couple dollars??
Russell,it is a fairly common coin in lower grades,as it was used quite often. It must be remembered that Scotland's currency system used a lot of very unusual denominations,& that the Scots Pound was worth a twelfth of the English (12 Pounds Scots = 1 Pound English). Aidan.
Wow. I noticed that coins from Scotland as a whole are uncommon as I only found about a dozen listed on ebay and that is quite something about the exchange rate. Thanks for all of your assistance btw.
