    That's an interesting one. I thought it was a coin at first glance but it looks like it's a gold medal. If it is, it's worth it's gold bullion content and perhaps some prenium.

    "Obverse" = "Front"
    "Reverse" = "Back"

    You definitely do not have a coin. The obverse is similar (with a somewhat different hair style) to the obverse of various coins, ranging from a 5¢ Netherlands piece to a 2-1/2 Guilden Netherlands Antilles piece; but the reverse is unlike any coin listed in the Standard Catalog of World Coins, and its diameter doesn't match up with any gold or "aureate steel" issues that I can find.

    The obverse legend translates as "Julianna, Queen of the Netherlands"; but Babel Fish chokes on the reverse legend. So far as I know we have no Dutch speakers, but we do have some German speaking forum members who might be of some help .

    The best non-destructive test for gold is specific gravity.

    The reverse says - Bulwark of Vruheid ( Vruheid is a city ). And yes it's a medal and I do believe it is made of gold. Not sure of the fineness though.

    And while don't speak Dutch pal, I do know enough to read most numismatic terms on Netherland's coinage ;)

    The inscription on the one side is obvious, Juliana Koningin der Nederlanden = Juliana, Queen of the Netherlands. Now "Holland Bolwerk der Vrijheid" means Holland, Bulwark of Freedom.

    And since the medal is dated 1959, this may refer to the 15th anniversary of the (WW2) liberation which in NL began in 1944. But the latter is just my guess.

    Christian, yes de vrijheid is freedom in Dutch. But the word on the coin is Vruheid.

    Look again. ;) The U is actually an IJ; the line is interrupted at the "nine o'clock" position. You would hardly ever see such a character combo in a computer font, for example, but with coins and medals the designers are more flexible ...

    Ahhhh - I stand corrected, good call Christian. Should have known better than to doubt you ;)

    It's actually tough to recognize, but I have seem that combo before, so ... :) Anyway, this is apparently a medal, but if rogerwilco's piece is about half an ounce of gold, it should be worth even more than €150 in terms of intrinsic value.
