trying to figure out what happened to this dime...

i found this dime awhile ago and thought it was cool because it has a rough texture and a very off color.... i know it is probably just damaged but like it none the less... the one question i have is what might cause this kind of damage.. the pic of the front is ok but the back was really hard to get as you can barely read it when holding

thank you for the info... like i said i didn't believe it to be worth anything just wanted to get an idea of what caused the damage to make sure i dont let this happen to another coin
