Got a QX5 digital microscope from my wife for Christmas (ok, she had some help picking it out!) and here are the first few images- from 1971 and 1972 DDOs I had handy:

    Hello AgCollector,
Are the pics straight from your QX5, or have you touched them up in a photo processing program?
I also got a new QX5, all my pics seem to come out real red in color and the lighting is too dark even on the highest setting. I don't think it works as well as my QX3 did, hope to have better luck in the future with it.

They are straight (although cropped) from the QX5, no touch-up. The lighting issue, well- it's something that needs to be tinkered with; I've seen a few threads on the internet on the subject and from what I remember a secondary light source improves things a lot.

AgCollector - I've had one for about 6 months and I'm pretty happy with it. It looks to me like you took those images at 60X, a setting that works the best for most coins. My only complaint is the 10X magnification - as the resolution isn't adequate enough for lincoln cents - as least for me. And of course, it's also the only magnification to use and get at least half the cent in the image, otherwise the 60X is the best for a few letters, etc. If anyone has found a way to use it at 10X and get some clear images of Lincoln Cents I'd sure appreciate any advice. All in all, you can't beat it considering the price!

    Thanks, A.J.

for those looking for ways to buy the QX5, just google it. i think Amazon sells it, but last time i looked alot of interent stores do sell it. I am not sure about brick and mortar stores however, so internet stores might be your best bet.

    I have the QX-3.
What is the difference (if anyone knows) between the 3 and the 5?

I will try to attach a picture from my QX-3.

    I hope that this works.

Frank.. the difference is 2.. : ) actually my understanding is the 5 has two bulbs, the 3 has one. The 3 makes everything look redish.

I have the 5 and its ok. I wish the resolution was higher on it but...

    A.J.,

You might try experimenting with some of the larger sized Loupes! I have one that has two lenses (5x + 5x = 10x) and I use it quite often when taking pictures of coins with my Digital Camera. I also have an Objective lens from a pair 7x35mm Binoculars that is still in the (Objective) housing that I use on occasion.

Nice image! Do you use any additional light source? My pictures just look washed out when I turn up the brightness on the microscope.

Yep, they're at 60x. I have noticed that with the 10x it's hard to get a cent in focus since the tray can't go up far enough, but I might try to put the coin on a smaller stand to get it closer in.

The QX5 has some improvements over the QX3 and QX3+. Besides the change in light source, the resolution was increased.
For imaging coins at 10x, I've heard some folks had to file/grind away some plastic to allow proper focus.
Most of the users I've talked to do not use the light source provided with the microscope. They shut it off and use external light(s).

i got a ken a vision microscope and it is really good quality. i got it at an auction for $10 but the light is broke so i have to hold a flashlight at the coin when looking, but for $10! :kewl:

    Jim,
I am having just the opposite problem, the old QX3 took great pics, the QX5 looks redish in color. It seems real dark under the 60X even though the lighting is brighter I'm told. I am using it on my new Vista system, and I'm not sure I beieve them when they say the software is set up for Vista. I am going to try and load it on my Laptop which is running XP to see if there is a difference.

    Nice pics guys,
