if you think calums was difficult then try this one............. 1. who is the only british monarch for whom no coins were struck since 1200? 2. who was the signatory on mafeking siege notes from the boer war? 3, who were the english monarchs prior to the tudors? 4, name the towns which issued 1700's tokens in lancashire?. 5, what is the denominational currency of the "black sheep bank"?
1. I probably got this one wrong but Edward VIII was though to have no coins struck or issued but some have been found and authenticated. 2. Army paymaster Captain Greener 3. The Plantagenet Monarchs with Richard III being the last monarch of this dynasty 4. Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester, Rochdale 5. Sterling (pound) the denomination was represented by a like kind number of sheep, 1 sheep = 1 pound and so on
It will be interesting to see the answers. (I have a pretty large collection of Monarch coinage along with the tokens and notes in your questions) Definitely not a walk in the park quiz.
1. Lady Jane Grey 2. Capt. Herbert Greener 3. The House of York 4. Manchester, Liverpool, Halsall, Lancaster, Rochdale 5. the Welsh pound
not quite right but you have got the rarest token, i have one of only 12 known examples. for number 5 technically correct but there was another currency used on the notes...which is the one i am looking for
along with some answers i will upload the items as proof. up to now we have 3 correct answers.............
1. Lady Jane Grey 2. Captain Herbert Greener 3. House of York 4. Liverpool, Halsall, Manchester, Birmingham, Lancaster, Rochdale 5. Shilling
Hah; I thought I typed "Preston" instead of "Birmingham", sorry. I don't know much about tokens, anyway. I'm still curious about question 5, though.
the answers are: 1 lady jane gray 2 captain herbert greener 3 house of york 4 liverpool, lancaster, rochdale, manchester, halsall, ORMSKIRK. 5 pound gynt
thanks to those taking part especially gviking who named arguably one of the rareset english tokens from HALSALL according to my local coin society there are only 12 known examples one of which i have in my collection.. so for that reason only i name gviking as the winner by default and he will recieve as a prize 4 mint state world bank notes.
Thanks moneyer! This was a fun (and difficult) contest, sorry I couldn't deliver fully on those last two questions.
