    Happy Friday!

Here is a legitimate two-sided reverse penny, and not a concoction. It is as struck by the Royal Mint and certified by NGC:

Is it an "error" or an pattern/trial of some kind?

How the devil (if ever) did that get into play?

Well it is as struck, AU58, but struck during an era of “mint sport” presumably on purpose. My favorite are the off metal strikes with regular obv and reverse Pennies.
Something of a debate as to whether designated an error though.

Not an error. An intentional strike by a person or persons not authorized to do so. Shame on NGC.

I think in the US this kind of "sport" is no longer possible because the dies only fit in one side of the press. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Not sure about other countries.

Somewhere I have a picture of a 1970 PROOF Penny, double reverse. The TPG did not want to certify!

We have quite a few magician coins, various denominations.

Let's see the other side of that slab. I'm curious how the coin flips, horizontally or vertically.

That cert lookup is the OP's actual coin. So it is the correct orientation.

Of course it is NOT a magician coin nor is the 1970 proof.

    This has medallic orientation:

Medal vs. coin alignment being correct for a coin made through mint shenanigans doesn't really matter. I imagine any orientation could have been produced if desired.

I have heard that this is now the case in Australia too.

I don't know how I missed that in your link, it was the cert lookup, the actual coin. Doh! :banghead:
