I have a coin with a large numeral 1 with below the number שלוס At least it looks to be Hebrew symbols. It looks very similar to a 1972 Israli Agorah. I have looked everywhere and can't figure out if is an Israli coin or what? The other side has an olive branch with some more symbols that I am unsure of. I'm not very good with reading symbols on these coins.
I don't claim any special expertise on Israeli coins, but after searching Krause and Numismaster.com I don't think it is a coin. The closest reverse to the questioned item is KM#106, an aluminum New Agorah issued from 1980-82, but the obverse is completely different. The obverse legend on both KM#106 and the questioned item is "Israel", but the reverse legends are, again, completely different. The coin includes the denomination and date, the posted item has some other word, and neither the denomination nor the date. All other Agorah/New Agorah coins in both the print and internet listings either have scalloped edges or totally different designs.
Definitely not a coin. Could be a part of some older memorabilia set by Israel Mint, since there is a word "peace" (שלום-shalom) and the word "Israel" in Hebrew and Arabic. All of Israeli coins always state denomination (pruta, agora, lira, shekel) and mint year.
I couldn't find anything on it, either. Perhaps it's a commemorative or maybe even play money. Need someone to translate the Hebrew on the coin.
Thanks for all the help. I'm apt to agree it probably isn't a minted coin. It looks real enough but without a date or denomination, it's probably not anything but a token or something. I was just hoping someone else had seen one before. It's a little smaller than the Agorah and pretty light as if made from Aluminum.
I've got one of those somewhere. I've tried repeatedly to figure it out. No luck. Since its small and aluminum, its probably not worth too much. Maybe it's a tax token or something.
I found this picture on another site and someone figured it to be a token as well. Anyways, this is a better picture of the coin if anyone's interested.
I guess we'll never know what it is unless crg flies out to Israel, goes up to probably the only numismatist there, and asks what it is hehe.
Well,we know of at least one numismatist there - forum member giladzuc. However, he hasn't been seen here since January.
I have two of these and do not know either. I have culled them from junk boxes as I collect Israeli Coins, Medals, Tokens and Banknotes. I am also a member of the American Israel Numismatic Association and have all of the back issues of "The Shekel." I do not recall ever seeing an article or mention of this token. Feel free to post your Israel Related questions and photos in the "Israel Coins and Stamps" group on facebook. And where is Gilad?
Taxidermist posted the translation ("Shalom" = "Peace"), apparently while you were typing since the timestamp is the same on your post and his!
