Hi All, In the course of playing Trivial Pursuit last night the following question came up: "Who was the first female native american to be featured on a US coin?" and the answer was "Pocahontas". Now, I had thought it should be Sacagawea, but what coin might Pocahontas be on- anyone know?
I would have to say the game is wrong. Pocahontas was only one of the long list considered for use on the $1 coin, but she has never been used on any other.
She was on a medal issued by the Jamestown Settlement. It even uses her Christian name,"Rebecca"..hmmm.who knew? Anyway ,they get 10 bucks for them, proceeds go to the Trust.
Just checked the index of the Guide Book, and, unless Pocahontas was on an obscure commemorative, they are wrong
The question was "Who was the first female native american to be featured on a US coin?" Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that Jamestown Settlement medals are considered coins by any recogtnized authority.
The dollar coin with Susan B. Anthony’s profile is remarkable in that it is the first coin to have a real-life woman on it. Of course, the female form was used to represent Liberty on a number of coins and Pocahontas and Martha Washington appeared on special issues of 19th-Century paper currency. But never before had a real woman appeared on widely issued American money. http://www.richmondfed.org/about_us/our_tours/money_museum/audio_tour/susanbanythonytext.cfm I would say the game is wrong.
Jim: I agree that the game is wrong, however, the first 'live' woman (as opposed to the representation of Liberty on previous coins) was actually Isabella on the Columbian Commemorative quarter produced for the 1892-1893 Columbian Expo.
Well my two posts were meant only in fun ,but as Roy correctly pointed out,the question involves only Native American women on a US coin, and it seems obvious that someone at Trivial Pursuit just got the two ladies mixed up.Hard to believe that it slipped by unnoticed though.Maybe this guy was responsible. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0CEFDD1239F93BA15753C1A962948260
Thanks all for the responses- now if only I can convince my wife that we should go back to that point in the game and award me the yellow piece of pie...
