    The U.S.A. Dimes of 1945!

Three Mints struck the 1945 Dimes:

    Philadelphia Mint (main mint)
    Denver Mint (branch mint)
    San Francisco Mint (branch mint)
    (photos courtesy of Coin Page)
Philadelphia Mint struck 159,130,000 Dimes (no mint mark).

    Here's one in BU:

    Here's one toned BU:

The branch mint at Denver minted 40,245,000 1945 Dimes bearing its D mint mark.

Here's one in BU Toned w/full bands (Wow!):

The branch mint at San Francisco produced 41,920,000 1945 Dimes bearing an S mint mark. However, an employee error occurred there. Most of those Dimes bear a regular sized S mint mark, but an unknown number of those S mint marked Dimes bear a "micro" S mint mark.

Here's a 1945 regular S in BU with full bands (another Wow!):

As you know, during those World War II years (1944 & 1945) the coins of the Philippines were struck at Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco

Some S mint mark punches made for striking Philippines 1945-S Five Centavos coins were not used and were stored in a room so they could be returned to Philadelphia. As striking of the U.S. Dimes progressed, another new S mint mark punch was needed to complete the minting. Inadvertantly, the employee sent to fetch the needed S mint mark punch picked up a Philippines 1945-S Five Centavos punch.

Viola! A 1945 U.S.A. Dime with a Philippines Five Centavos "micro" S on it!

    Here a photo of a BU 1945 "micro" S U.S.A. Dime:

1945-P -FB- are very rare and highly sought after cause they were struck with a hammer:hammer: instead of a die (well the 1st part is true).

    Very nice, thank you :)
Good to see high quality pictures to compare them too. :)

I'll have to check my dimes.

I don't have any 1945s, but, since I collect silver coins of the world dated 1935 (my birth year), I have some 1935 P, S and Ds.

I've got one in an old NGC green holder. It has a mottled toning and graded MS 65. I believe it has full split bands but is not indicated on the holder. I'm going to have to get it out an look at it again. Let's see...Where did I put it?

Here are some old photos of it. They are not very good pictures as I have not been too successful in taking good photos of the coins in holders.

I do a similar thing with proof sets.

its easier to find proof sets dated 1987 though ;)

A 45 micro S is one coin that I will not forget easily. A few years ago I was in search of one and I found a gorgeous specimen at my local coin shop. Stupid me had to bring it to everyones attention. I might as well had red flags and flashing lights above my head. Not only was it a micro S, but full bands to boot. Needless to say, the owner snatched it out of my hands and put it in his auction. It ended up going for several hundred dollars. THis is where my memory if fuzzy, but I believe he offered it to me for $90 and I turned him down. Oh well. I ended up getting one, but not as nice and definitely not full bands. A few of the old timers pulled me aside and gave me some tips about "cherrypicking"... and the first tip was too keep your mouth shut when you find a cherry.

I always enjoy your posts. Having been a contractor for 22 years I did a bit of cementing before. lol
Now you made me dig out my box of dimes... The other years I have with the micro S are 1940 and 1941. The previous owner must have researched them because he wrote micro s on the 2X2 holders. I have never verified it.

Being a Mercury Dime nut, yes I have many of them. In fact I have well over 3,000 Mercury Dimes. 12 almost completed Whitman Classic Albums. 10 are completed.
Oddly enough there are numerous other micro or just very small mint marks on the Mercury Dime series. Only lately have some made notariety in the Red Book such as the 23, 28, 34 and both S and D Mint marks.
Also, I find that this series has that little Mint Mark moving all over the place.
One thing seldom ever mentioned about the Mercury Dime is it is probably the worst coin for having a rotated reverse. I've found that possibly 25% have some sort of rotated reverses and some are extreame.
Thanks again to Clinker for the information. Sure wish there weren't so many links to see though. I print out most of your post and in the future those links may not exist.
