Do you own both United States 1945-S Mercury Dimes or have you ever compared the two? Well, if you're interested, here's the regular '45-S Dime's reverse: Courtesy of Coin Page: http://www.coinpage.com/large.php?tImageId=5680 And here's the Micro S reverse: http://www.coinpage.com/large.php?tImageId=5682 Do you know how the Micro S got there? San Francisco minted coins for the Philippines as well as U.S. coins. The mint had just finished striking 1945 5 Centavos and 10 Centavos coins for the Philippines (the last United States of America issues). Some of those S mint mark die punches were not used and were placed in a room where unused punches were stored until they could be returned to Philadelphia. Shortly afterwards the mint started producing more '45-S Dimes and needed to replace a well- worn Mercury Dime S mint mark punch. One of the employees mistakenly went to the storage room and picked up a Philippines punch with the micro S mint mark. Here's a photo of a Philippines 1944-S (Same Micro S as the 55) 5 Centavos coin (courtesy of Coin Page) that you may use to compare the Micro S mint marks: http://www.coinpage.com/large.php?tImageId=5429 If you have collected the Dimes, maybe you should consider adding the 44 or 45 Philippines 5 Centavos, 10 Centavos or both to your collection. Did you enjoy this trivia? Clinker
Clinker: Interesting info, however, rather than a Phillippine die, don't you mean S mintmark punch? The die would have been the same as the reverse of the Phillippine coin. Now THAT would have been a great mule.
Clinker , nice thread , now I have another 20th century type coin to get , Keep these tidbits coming . rzage
I love it when the trivia pertains to stuff I especially like to collect. Actually, I like the trivia that doesn't pertain to my collection also. Bruce
somehow the pics did not come up. I wonder if it's the pics expired some how? I would have liked to see the difference.
Ah thats cool, I did not know this. I have both varieties of the 45s Mercury, and I just so happen to have a Phillippines 10 centavos with the S mint mark. I just dug em all out and compared. Thanks for the info.
