Sorry, Posting problems.Regarding the U.S.A. $5 paper currency printed from 1922. You know the bills, silver certificates, bank notes and Federal Reserve Notes, bearing the Lincoln Memorial on the reverse. As you probably know the actual Lincoln Memorial building is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in close proximity to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial and the National World War II Memorial and was dedicated on May 30, 1922. You know the architect of the building was Henry Bacon, the sculptor of the main statue (Abraham Lincoln, 1920) was Daniel Chester French, and the painter of the interior murals was Jules Guerin. You probably know the building is in the form of a Greek Doric temple and contains a large seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln (13' high) and inscriptions of two of his famous speeches, The Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address. If you've ever visited the Lincoln Memorial then you know above the colonnade, inscribed on the frieze, are the names of 36 states and the dates in which they entered the Union. Their names are separated by double wreath medallions in bas-relief. The cornice simulates a carved scroll regularly interspersed with projecting lions' heads and ornamented with palmetto cresting along the upper edge. Above this on the attic frieze are inscribed the names of the 48 contiguous states at the time of the Memorial's dedication. A bit higher is a garland joined by ribbons and palm leaves, supported by the wings of eagles. All ornamentation on the friezes and cornices was done by sculptor Ernest C. Bairstow. No state's name appears on the Lincoln Memorial residing on the reverse of the Lincoln Cents minted from 1959 through 2008. You probably already ascertained size restrictions prevented Frank Gasparro from including the states' names in his design, but what you may not know is that the reverse of the five-dollar bills (series 1928 to date) depicting the Lincoln Memorial bears the engravings of 26 State names on the building, which appears on the note's vignette. As a result, only 26 of the States appear on the note. The following is excerpted from the U.S. Treasury archives:""The upper frieze of the Memorial bears the States of Arkansas, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin, California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, West Virginia, Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, and North Dakota. The lower Frieze lists the States of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, and New York. In addition, the engravings show the abbreviated names Hampshire (for New Hampshire) and Carolina (for South Carolina). No one knows why the prefixes for those two states were omitted (perhaps more space restrictions).(end of excerpt)Here's photos of some of the different $5 bills, notes and silver certificates issued bearing the Lincoln Memorial on them (photos courtesy of frbsf.org)$5 Legal Tender Note Series 1928:http://www.frbsf.org/currency/stability/legal/1712.html$5 Federal Reserve Bank Note Series 1929: http://www.frbsf.org/currency/stability/banknotes/1690.html$5 Silver Certificate Sereies 1934:http://www.frbsf.org/currency/stability/certs/s93.html$5 Federal Reserve Note Hawaii 1941 - 1944:http://www.frbsf.org/currency/stability/notes/1696.html$5 Silver Certificate, North Africa 1941 - 1944:http://www.frbsf.org/currency/stability/notes/1699.html$5 Legal Tender Note Hawaii 1941 - 1944:http://www.frbsf.org/currency/stability/notes/Kc2.html"The following links may lead to a $5 bill, note, or silver certificate for sale.
