Our quest to reveal some of the Pre Empire German States' "Thaler" coinage brings us to the final listing under the letter D which now stands for Detmold. Detmold was the capital of the small Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918 and then of the Free State of Lippe until 1947. Today it is the administrative center of the district of Lippe and of Regierungsbesirk. Detmold, thus, in this post. is referred to as Lippe-Detmold. To see just how small the principality of Lippe was, look at this map of Germany. Lippe's area is defined in red on the following map (Wikipedia image): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Map-DB-Lippe.svg Here's some of the "Thaler" coinage of Lippe-Detmold: Minor Coinage: 1605 Mariengroschen (Grote): http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=939179&AucID=696&Lot=1479&Val=8744f343836669efb9417476e37a1931 1620 Grote (Mariengroschen): http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=998141&AucID=926&Lot=964&Val=194cf444f5458758d8c7ce1581ba0096 Major Coinage: 1672 Reichsthaler: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=941361&AucID=697&Lot=2801&Val=89a19a15a5acaa5dbd3dac450e02d073 1713 Reichsthaler: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=941362&AucID=697&Lot=2802&Val=2a2cbee1c852a1a1ddaeea0a52cfd3e 1719 2/3 Thaler: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=941364&AucID=697&Lot=2804&Val=2231c0ccc2545bfeabca8a9eae7819bd 1761 2/3 Thaler: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=998403&AucID=926&Lot=1226&Val=67b276c11cd3fa255841a2d248641dc9 1767 Konventionsthaler: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=941365&AucID=697&Lot=2805&Val=41eb463b5b84200c5cce3c678b2164eb 1793 Gulden: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=941367&AucID=697&Lot=2807&Val=c083ded3beb6c2cf3683673d4da7b768 1843-A (Berlin Mint) Dopplethaler (2 Thaler): http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=993550&AucID=923&Lot=23985&Val=475f2ad19ac4b20282c049d1383d59de 1857- B 2 Thaler Commemorative - Prince Wilhelm's 50th Anniversary of reign http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=993589&AucID=923&Lot=24024&Val=36ac0afe686fea649711c60b7c10ceaf 1860 Vereinsthaler: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1017377&AucID=938&Lot=1697&Val=0b47e7acb5e1e1ca5dd14348b0758aca 1865 Vereinsthaler: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1017792&AucID=938&Lot=2112&Val=4f37d4c8e3b0acd3bbede416e5a66786 1880 Dopplethaler (2 Thaler): http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=993550&AucID=923&Lot=23985&Val=475f2ad19ac4b20282c049d1383d59de Hope you enjoyed seeing those Lippe-Detmold Free State Thaler coins... Lippe I have always found interesting because the territory is not anywhere near the Lippe river that it was named after. Apparently the rulers originally came from an area near that river but later had their lands further north ... The official term of the principality was just "Lippe". But since there was also a country/state named "Schaumburg-Lippe" (today part of Schaumburg county, in the state of Lower Saxony), it made sense to use Lippe-Detmold to easily keep the two apart. Talking about Schaumburg-Lippe, two of the coins you showed us (the 1857 Commemorative and the 1865 Vereinsthaler) are from that place. Oh, and one link (1713 Reichsthaler) I could not get to work. Still an interesting presentation, thanks! And since I am from North Rhine Westphalia, which the county (Kreis) Lippe is a part of, let me show you our coat of arms: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bb/Coat_of_arms_of_North_Rhine-Westfalia.svg The green part with the river represents Rhineland, the red part with the horse is Westphalia ... and the small part at the bottom is Lippe, with its rose that you also see on many of the coins in your first post.
