Thaler Coinage of the Pre Empire German States - Chapter 20 Our quest of becoming familiar with the Thaler coinage of the 1,800 German States in alphabetical order has taken us through the letters A and B. We come to our first listing under letter C which designates Cassel. Before we look at photos of the Thaler coinage, lets learn about the make-up of Cassel (Kassel)and its location within the framework of our quest. The city's name is derived from the ancient Castellum Cattorum, a castle of the Chatti, a German tribe that had lived in the area since Roman times. Cassel was first mentioned in 913 AD as the place where two deeds were signed by King Conrad I. The place was called Chasella and was a fortification at a bridge crossing the Fulda river. A deed from 1189 certifies that Cassel (Kassel) had city rights, but the date of their conveyance is not known. In 1567, the landgraviate of Hesse, until then centered in Marburg, was divided among four sons, with Hesse-Cassel becoming one of its successor states. Cassel was its capital. As with many German States, Cassel, was affiliated with different land graviates, other city states and even, at times, became properties of Sweden, Netherlands, Austria, and France because of wars, lineage die out (no heirs) and divisions because of multiple heirs. Thus the coins struck by and for use within Cassel is varied indeed! Hesse-Cassel is the only non-Prussian Thaler I own (I've shown it before). With my mind on the 30 years war, it is interesting that Hesse-Cassel minted coins with Gustav on them (and not the local Duke). Do the silver (and Base) coins also have Gustav on them? Thanks Clinker
The coins showing Gustav were minted at various places, e.g. Stockholm or Stettin (Szczecin). Hessen-Kassel was an ally of Gustaf II Adolf in the Thirty Years War; guess that Clinker wanted to show us coins from the "dominant force" at that time and place. Here is a PDF file that shows (on a background of the mint building in Kassel) various "local" rulers and coins: http://www.muenzfreunde-darmstadt.d...zboerse/4_Belegung/2010MuenzstaetteKassel.pdf Side note: Mercenaries from Hessen-Kassel fought on the side of the English in the Revolutionary War. Roughly 15,000 were "transferred" to the US to fight those people who wanted to be independent. About 1,500 were killed, many were captured ... and quite a few were able to escape and then settled where they had been supposed to fight. Christian
