Do you know how vast India was during the British-India era (1835-1947)? The whole of India included what is now India, Bangladash and Pakistan. The monetary system of British-India was: 1 1/2 Pies = 1/2 Pice (pronunciation; Paisa) 3 Pies = 1 Pice (1 Pice = 1/4 Anna) 4 Pice = 1 Anna (12 Pies) (1 Pie = 1/12 Anna) 16 Annas = 1 Rupee (192 Pies) 15 Rupees = 1 Mohur When the Republic of India scrapped its old Monetary system in favor of the decimal system in 1957 the word Naya or Naye (New) preceded the denomination, i.e. Naya Paisa, 5 Naye Paise, 10 Naye Paise, 25 Naye Paise, and 50 Naye Paise to alert the bearer of the coin of the monetary system changes. In 1964 Naya and Naye were dropped. (1957-1963) 100 Naya Paise = 1 Rupee (Naya nor Naye never applied to Rupees) (1964 to date) 100 Paise = 1 Rupee With the implementation of the first decimal coinage (1 Paisa plus 5, 10 and 25 Paise coins) in 1957 India mint officials kept their large population of blind citizens in mind and designed the coins so they could easily identify them by touch (holding in one's hands). I have a 1 Rupee and a 50 Paise from the 70's, had them in a Coin Outta The Vault thread a while back. Nice to see some of the older examples and a little history behind them! Thanks Clinker!
