    What are Jetons?

    They are not coins.

    Here's an explanation from JetonCollector.com:

"A jeton is basically a token, or an object that resembles currency but does not have the function of currency. It will resemble currency in that it will be made of the same base metals as currency, but will not bear a face value as currency does. Jetons were not made to circulate as coinage, but rather used initially as counters and then eventually developed as gifts. There were exceptions where jetons were given as pay to employees and shareholders, but were probably only exchangable locally."

    JetonCollector.com further notes:

"Jetons were also often used as gaming pieces, very much like casino chips are used today. It is possible that the jeton was used as placemarkers or as gambling chips, but not much has been published describing specific instances or applications."

Would you like to see a few of these Jetons?

Before we close this article, JetonCollectors.com wants you to know that France struck more Jetons than any other country in the world. They have a basic list of the recipients of officially manufactured Jetons:

"1. Central Administration (includes the following) -
King's Administration (Includes the king's council, justice, secretaries, etc.)
Royal Finances (Includes the king's treasurers, accounting, etc.)
    The Royal Estate
    The Royal Family
    Military
Department of the City of Paris
Institutions of Paris (Includes finances, civic officials, churches and clergy, academies, and corporations)
    French Colonies

    2. Provincials (Includes both official and private bodies/parties)

    3. Municipalities of Paris (includes offices such as mayor, attorney, sheriff, etc.)"

Hope you enjoyed your scenic view of this numismatic subdivision...
