    This week's Trivia presents the Millennium Year 2000 coins of the Balkan Countries: Albania, Bavaria, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

    ALBANIA:

    Steel Five Leke

    This coin was 1st minted in 1995 and was not struck again until 2000. Obv: Imperial Eagle. Rev: Olive Branch.

    Bulgaria reformed its coinage program in '99 so photo of coin may bear a previous date such as '99, but will be indicative of the type.

    In 2000 Bulgaria produced four Proof Silver Coins.

    One coin (33.9mm) (2662 oz. ASW) commemorates the "New Millennium." Obverse: National Arms above a huge date "2000" with pierced zeros. Reverse: Bell above huge date with pierced zeros.

    The next two are 38.5mm and have an ASW of .6938 oz.

    One celebrates "Summer Olympics." Obverse: National Arms. Reverse: Torso of man lifting weights.

    The second celebrates "Christianity." Obverse: National Arms. Reverse: Church Patriarch.


    Our final coin (38.5mm) (.6938 oz, ASW) Commemorates "Bulgarian Association with the European Union." Obverse: National Arms. Reverse: Bulgarian coin design of the Middle Ages.

    GREECE

    Some Greek Coins were not only struck in the denoted metal/s, but a proof version was struck in Gold or other Precious Metal (same design, but different composition). The coin pictured will be representarive of a 2000 dated coin.

    Copper Drachma

    The woman detailed on the reverse of this, and other, coin/s was a Naval Commander during 1783 - 1825 (Lascarina Bouboulina). This design was minted in 2000 as a proof in Gold (0.2505 oz. AGW) as well as Copper.

    23.8mm Bronze Denar

    Commemorates the New Millennium "2000 Years of Christianity." Obverse bears design of a Byzantine Copper Folis. Reverse bears representation of the Ornamented Cross kept at Saint George Monastery in Poloski. This very denomination was also struck in silver (.2082 oz. ASW) and gold (.2356 oz, AGW). 2,000 of each were struck as NCLTs.
