2007 COIN OF THE YEAR AWARDS Well, after two rounds of voting by an international judging panel, the results are in. Three U.S. coins took top honors in their respective categories! Before I reveal those coins here's some info about the COTY Awards. This yearly awards program is sponsored by Krause Publication's World Coin News, There are ten categories. The first COTY Awards was held in 1984. To be fair to all the world's mints, a two year delay was put into place. So the award program in 1984 was for 1982 minted coins. This year's considerations are coins minted in 2005. (not dated 2005, but struck in 2005). Before I reveal the ten winners here in 2007, guess which U.S. coin won first place in 1984. It is an Australian coin. It received top honors in the category Most Innovative Coinage Concept. The innovation is: when the coin is turned, the image does a full circle. The winning denomination? 100 Euros.Wotld Cup Soccer. I couldn't locate a photo of the gold coin, but I did locate a 10 Euro silver coin with the same design, obverse and reverse. I couldn't find photos for them, but I'll describe them and give you the KM numbers so you can look them up: Belarus took top honors for their 20 Rubles coin in the Most Artistic Coin category. It's Csatalog number is KM 99. It has an ornately decorated Easter Egg on the reverse. Not quite ... that series (issued 2003-2006) consisted of four €10 silver coins and one €100 gold coin, and while the sides with the eagle are pretty much the same, the other side varies from issue to issue.
