Celebrities on Coins - Grace Kelly

You know Grace Kelly was an American Osacar winning actress who married Rainier III (in April, 1956) Prince of Monaco, and became Her Serene Highness The Princess of Monaco, and was commonly referred to as Princess Grace.

What you may not know is that even though she took an active role in her duties as Princess Grace, she also retained her American roots, maintaining dual US and Monégasque citizenships.

Being such a celebrity icon you probably know she died on September 14, 1982, two months before her 53rd birthday, when she lost control of her automobile and crashed after suffering a stroke.

Shortly after Princess Grace's demise, Monaco authorized the Paris Mint to produce a copper-nickel-aluminum 10 Francs essai coin commemorating her death. The coin features the head of Princess Grace and the dates 1929 and 1982 on its obverse. A rose dominates the reverse.

In man's recognition of time the next coins featuring Princess Grace came into being in 1986 when Gibraltar authorized a series of commemoratives titled Centenary of the Cinema. Some of these coins were struck in fractional gold Crown pieces including 1/25 (KM# 390), 1/10 (KM# 391) and 1/5 Crown (KM#392). A 1/5 Crown (KM# 392a) was minted in platinum. All have the same obverse and reverse devices:

Now let you and me fast forward to the year 2007 when Monaco authorized the minting of a 2 Euro commemorative bi-metallic coin (KM#186) remembering the 25th Anniversary of Princess Grace's death.
