To celebrate the "Shilling Era" in 2001 the Austrian Mint issued a 26.5mm Bi-metallic 50 Shilling coin consisting of a Copper-Nickel clad Nickel Center placed in a Aluminum-Bronze Ring. The obverse has the denomination "50" centered amid a circle of past Austrian shields. The outter rim of the coin's obverse bears the words REPUBLIK OSTERREICH running clockwise from 8:00 to 4:00 and the word SCHILLING running counterclockwise from 7:00 to 5:00. The reverse of the 50 Shilling piece features 4 older One Shilling coins in an quasi-eliptical configuration with text reading clockwise from 9:00 to 5:50 as SCHILLING - 16.JUNI 1924 - 28. FEBRUAR 2002. Here's a photo of the obverse and reverse of that coin courtesy of Don's World Coin Gallery (worldcoingallery.com): 2001 Austria 50 Shilling (Shilling Era): 600,000 were struck for circulation and 100,000 Special Uncirculated NCLTs were minted for collectors. http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...g (2001) Schillings &query=Austria Schillings Let's follow up with photos of the actual older 1 Shilling coins featured on the reverse (worldcoingallery.com photos): The 1924 dated large coin (Parliament Building in Vienna): http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...2835 1 Schilling (1924)&query=Austria km 2835 The 1925 Coat of Arms Shield on Spray of Edelweiss on Medium Coin Top Right: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...1 Schilling (1925-1932)&query=Austria km 2840 1959 Aluminum-Bronze Edelweiss Flower on Smallest Coin: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...1 Schilling (1959-2001)&query=Austria km 2886 1946 Aluminum Full Figure with Seed Bag on Left Hip on Medium Size Coin Top Left: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...1 Schilling (1946-1957)&query=Austria km 2871 Who would have thought it? Yep, I have those coins, plus the one that depicts them. One side note: The shields around the "50" are the coats of arms of the nine Austrian states. http://www.austria-lexikon.at/af/Wissenssammlungen/Symbole/Staatssymbole_Übersicht (The first one on that page, with the eagle, is the federal flag and CoA. The others are those of the states.) Interesting, by the way, that the male sower was inspired by a painting depicting the devil. See this page (in German) for that painting by Albin Egger-Lienz ...
