Modern Coins With Angels on Them is another time consuming task, but one that can, at times, be an inspiring project, as one experiences man's attempts at beauty in religious art. Most of the angels you will see adorning the following coins will be of female persuasion, but some Biblical scholars will quickly point out there is no mention of female angels. All angels mentioned in the Bible have male names. However we can choose to admire the artistry of those mortals who created feminine Heavenly creatures.

Also, there are those who will wonder where the gold coins named Angel are. Let me address that fact now. An Angel is a gold coin, first used in France where it was known as an Angelot or Ange in 1340. Perhaps the Angel coin most known by modern collectors is the English version. Edward IV was responsible for it becoming an English gold coin by replacing the gold Nobel with an "Angel-nobel". One reason the "Angel-nobel" is not listed in my trivia is, it was last issued in 1642. The second reason is, there is not a depiction of an Angel on the coin. The figure on the coin is a rendition of Saint Michael and the dragon. And the Mexican Libertads are not included because the image is not an angel, but an artist's rendition of the goddess Victory with wings (winged Victory).

Here's my first selection to begin this trivia::

Our next example hails from a one-time minting of the Commonwealth of New Island. And, as you will see, it is a 2003 One Roger coin: The legend "JOY" adds to the presence of the angel:

And, of course, the Papal States, such as Vatican City, must have some coins with angels on them. Here's a 1985 ten Lire coin::

This Peruvian 1966 20 Soles commemorative adds another Angel Coin to our article:

Poland steps up to the Angel category with this 2000 two Zlote Jubelee coin with four (count them) winged creatures including an Angel in the upper left quadrant of the coin: (This aught to please fellowcollector!)

    Well, there you have it!
Oh, there's one more Angel coin....coming....coming...coming...
