An Error Coin You May Not Know Exists - Episode 24 - Judean Circa 40 BC

You know that during the Roman Empire era, Procurators were given authority over certain territories to conduct the business of the Emporator. You know that Judea was such an entity.

You, also, know one of the coins struck by the Judean mints is comprised of bronze and is called Prutah.

You saw some photos of bronze Prutahs that were minted during AD 9 -AD 12.

Today you will see a Prutah produced much earlier. Prutahs were struck at both the Samarian and Jerusalem mints. This one dates circa 40 BC. What makes this particular Prutah so interesting and desireable is the fact it is a triple error coin:

    1. It is struck off-center (obverse)
    2. During the process of cutting the reverse die two errors occurred that have been corrected.
    A. The missing letter Ο in the legend ΗΡΩΔΟΥ was added in the left field above the date.
    B. The date and monogram seem to have been added also later since no sufficient space was originally left, thus their size is exceptionally small
    .

It looks like quality control caught the two errors on the reverse and corrections (like modern day repunched mint marks and/or date strikeovers) were made to allow the coin be released into circulation. Don't know why the obverse off-center didn't stop the coin's release.

Hope you enjoyed this Judean "error" coin.

    To be continued...
