:) You know Jefferson's image on the 2005 nickel's obverse was changed by enlarging it. You may have even noticed the word "Liberty" is in a cursive type style, but do you know it is an exact reproduction of Jefferson's own handwriting?

As to the 2005 "Ocean in View" nickel's reverse you surely read the inscription printed on the clift, "Ocean in View, Oh, the Joy!", giving the coin it's theme, but do you know those exact words were taken from Clark's journal dated November 7, 1805?

Did you enjoy this bit of numismatics trivia?

Did you know that the "Ocean in View..." quote is not identical to Clark's original? In his journal Clark wrote, "Ocian in View! Oh, the Joy!" The mint debated accurately reproducing the original and abandoned the idea as too confusing for those not familiar with the actual journal entry. They didn't want to have to deal with the complaints that would occur if they produced a coin with a word obviously mis-spelled.

I'm pretty sure Clark left out the punctuation as well. Neat bit of trvia, thanks for posting it.

Chuckle, spelling was a(t)trocious during this period and often varied from region to region.

This bit of trivia was posted by mistake. The "Borrowed Designs" will be posted next week (This was supposed to be Trivia - 2005 Nickel")
Sorry about that! It seems it will be a super task to post two new Trivia Threads a week (That's 104 a year!).

I had a stroke and can only use one hand to type.

I saw a history channel special on the expedition and they said that Clark had particularly atrocious spelling even for the times. He often spells exactly the same word in several different ways in his journals.

Thank you Speedy for the help. That's one of the reasons I visit this "Coin Talk" chat room. And thanks to all of you who comment, correct me and add new uncovered facts and opinions. That gives me a chance to add to my numismatic knowledge.
